The Greatest World Cup Goals of All Time

From Maradona's Goal of the Century to Richarlison's bicycle kick — the most iconic, breathtaking goals in FIFA World Cup history, ranked and relived.

·7 min read

The World Cup has always been football's grandest stage — and the greatest World Cup goals are the moments that define it. A single strike can turn an unknown into a legend, reduce millions to tears, or be replayed for decades after everyone who was there has left the stadium. These are the goals that transcend the sport.

Here are the most iconic goals in FIFA World Cup history, from the golden age of Pelé to the modern brilliance of Mbappé and Messi.

Diego Maradona vs England — The Goal of the Century (1986)

No list of the greatest World Cup goals can start anywhere else. On 22 June 1986 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Diego Maradona picked up the ball inside his own half, turned, and ran. Over the next ten seconds, he dribbled past Peter Beardsley, Peter Reid, Terry Fenwick, and Terry Butcher — who he beat twice — before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

It was the quarter-final. It was four minutes after his infamous "Hand of God" goal. And it remains, almost 40 years later, the single greatest individual goal ever scored at a World Cup. FIFA officially named it the Goal of the Century — and nobody has seriously challenged the title since.

Carlos Alberto vs Italy — The Perfect Team Goal (1970)

If Maradona's goal was the ultimate individual effort, Carlos Alberto's goal in the 1970 World Cup final was its perfect opposite — the greatest team goal the tournament has ever seen.

Brazil were already 3-1 up against Italy in the final in Mexico City when the move began deep in their own half. Tostão, Brito, Clodoaldo (who dribbled past four Italian defenders), Gérson, Jairzinho, and Pelé all touched the ball before Pelé laid off an inch-perfect pass to the right. Carlos Alberto, the captain and right-back, came thundering forward and drove the ball into the bottom corner with unstoppable power.

Seven outfield players. One devastating finish. It was the exclamation mark on what many consider the greatest football team ever assembled.

Manuel Negrete vs Bulgaria — The Scissor Kick (1986)

In 2018, FIFA held a global fan vote to crown the greatest World Cup goal of all time. The winner was not Maradona, not Pelé, not any of the usual suspects — it was Manuel Negrete.

In the round of 16 at the 1986 World Cup, in front of 114,580 fans at the Estadio Azteca, Negrete played a pass to teammate Javier Aguirre, received the return volley, and launched himself sideways into the air to strike a breathtaking scissor kick past Bulgarian goalkeeper Borislav Mikhailov. Mexico won 2-0, and the goal was immortalised with a plaque at the Azteca.

The Modern Classics

The 21st century has produced its own crop of unforgettable World Cup strikes. Here are the standout goals from recent tournaments.

James Rodríguez vs Uruguay (2014)

James Rodríguez announced himself on the world stage with six goals at the 2014 World Cup, but one stood above the rest. In the round of 16 against Uruguay, he controlled a headed clearance from Abel Aguilar with his chest, let the ball drop, and hammered a left-footed volley that flew past Fernando Muslera via the crossbar. It won the Goal of the Tournament award and is widely considered one of the finest strikes in World Cup history.

Benjamin Pavard vs Argentina (2018)

France were losing 2-1 to Argentina in the round of 16 when Benjamin Pavard — a defender who had never scored an international goal — struck a spinning half-volley with his right foot from outside the box. The ball swerved violently into the top corner, and the stadium erupted. France went on to win 4-3 and eventually lifted the trophy. Pavard's goal won the Goal of the Tournament award.

Richarlison vs Serbia (2022)

Richarlison's bicycle kick against Serbia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was pure acrobatic brilliance. Vinícius Júnior delivered a cross from the left, and Richarlison — 13 yards out with his back to goal — flicked the ball up to himself with his right foot and volleyed it in with a scissor kick that left goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić rooted to the spot. It won the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament award by a landslide.

Dennis Bergkamp vs Argentina — Three Perfect Touches (1998)

In the dying minutes of the 1998 World Cup quarter-final between the Netherlands and Argentina, the score was level at 1-1. Then Frank de Boer launched a 60-yard pass from inside his own half towards Dennis Bergkamp. What followed was three of the most exquisite touches in football history.

Touch one: he killed the ball dead with his right foot. Touch two: he turned inside, taking defender Roberto Ayala out of the game. Touch three: he guided the ball into the far corner. It was the 89th minute, and the Netherlands were through.

Bergkamp has called it the greatest goal of his career — and has famously never watched a replay. "It's still in my mind," he said. "I know exactly how it went."

Every FIFA Goal of the Tournament Winner

Since 2006, FIFA has awarded an official Goal of the Tournament prize at each World Cup. South American players have dominated the award.

Four of the five winners have been South American players. Every single winner came from a knockout-round match or a high-pressure group game. And four of the five were volleys — World Cup voters clearly love a ball struck out of the air.

Pelé, Fontaine, and the Goals That Defined Eras

Some of the greatest World Cup goals belong to a time before replays and social media, preserved only in grainy footage and legend.

Pelé's goal in the 1958 World Cup final — at just 17 years old — saw him lob the ball over a Swedish defender inside the penalty area and volley it in before it hit the ground. It was a moment of breathtaking audacity from a teenager on the biggest stage in football.

Just Fontaine scored 13 goals at that same 1958 tournament, a record that has stood for nearly 70 years. While no single Fontaine goal is as celebrated as Maradona's or Pelé's, his sheer volume of brilliance across six matches remains the most prolific individual World Cup campaign in history — achieved, remarkably, in a pair of borrowed boots.

What Makes a Great World Cup Goal?

The greatest World Cup goals share something beyond technique. They carry context — a quarter-final with everything on the line, a final watched by billions, a teenager announcing himself to the world. A stunning goal in a meaningless group match is impressive. The same goal in a knockout round, with a nation's hopes riding on it, becomes immortal.

That is what separates the World Cup from everything else in football. The goals scored here are not just remembered — they are relived, generation after generation.
